Volunteers needed for bicycle and pedestrian counts in Lawrence, Eudora and Baldwin City

The Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization is looking for volunteers for a variety of bicycle and pedestrian counting projects happening this September in Lawrence, Eudora and Baldwin City. There are hundreds of available counting opportunities as part of the following projects:

The annual Bicycle Rider and Pedestrian Project will count locations throughout Lawrence, Eudora and Baldwin City to gather data on bicycling and walking usage to assist city and regional leaders in estimating usage and demand for bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

The Lawrence School Crossing Guard Count is one of our first steps to developing a citywide Safe Routes to School Plan. Data is being gathered at existing school crossing guard locations. This data collection effort was started in the spring, but rain delayed the completion of the counts.

The Lawrence Downtown Count is an ongoing effort to collect usage numbers. These counts have been conducted every spring and fall.

100+ brave the heat to attend Lawrence’s 2019 Community Bike Ride

It had been a scorching week but after discussions with the organizers and the forecast that said we'd start with a temp of 80 degrees and be done before the mercury broke 90 we forged ahead.

We were able to use the new shelter at the Lawrence Rotary Arboretum which allowed more space in the tent to fit people with new helmets.

Thank you to our sponsors and everyone who came out to ride and volunteer.

Help Determine the East 23rd Street Multimodal Corridor Plan

The Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) needs your help creating the vision for the East 23rd Street Multimodal Corridor Plan. The study area of the plan spans from the Haskell Bridge east to O’Connell Road and will consider bicycle and pedestrian amenities, enhanced transit stops, roadway redesign, corridor aesthetics, and more. The plan will lay the foundation for the ultimate design of East 23rd Street, from the Haskell Bridge to 600 feet east of Anderson Avenue, when it is reconstructed in 2021-22.

The Visioning Session will use topical breakout sessions to address several subjects, including existing conditions, access management, bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, transit, aesthetics, and economic development.

It will be held from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25 in Flory Hall at the Douglas County Fairgrounds (2120 Harper Street).

Lawrence Community Bike Ride Set For July 20th!

The 2019 Community Bike Ride is set for July 20th. We'll again be at Lawrence's Rotary Arboretum at 27th and Waukarusa.

This year we have 4 rides planned for folks of all ages and experience.

4 Miles – 9:30 am – Sanders Mound
6/8 Miles – 9:00 am- K-10 Trail
12 Miles – 8:30 am – I-70 Turnaround
22 Miles – 8:00 am – Lawrence Loop

We are excited to again to be sponsoring free helmets, safety vest, and other exciting goodies (while supplies last).

After a trial run last year, we will again be partnering with Lawrence's bike-share company VeoRide who will offer FREE bikes for use during the event.

All of this is made possible by volunteers from Lawrence Central Rotary and some fine local sponsors who love supporting getting outdoors and being active.

We will have releases on-site for attendees to sign when checking in, but you can also download one here to fill out and bring if you like.

Lawrence Parks & Rec Hosting Bicycle Commuting Classes this summer

Enroll now for Lawrence Parks & Rec's "Confident, Capable, Commuters" Bicycle class.

Do you want to take advantage of all the benefits of commuting by bicycle but aren’t sure how to get started? Have you been riding for years but never received any instruction on the rules of the road? This class, taught by instructors certified by the League of American Bicyclists, is designed to be beneficial to all levels of riders. Participants will learn how to ride safely in traffic and on the sidewalk, basic bike maintenance, and group riding skills. Participants must provide their own bicycle and helmet.
