Octoginta is this weekend in Lawrence!

Come to Lawrence, Kansas October 9-10 and join the Lawrence Bicycle Club and hundreds of other cyclists for the traditional wind-up event of the year. Sign up early; entrance is limited to the first 1,000 riders. In its 41st year, the Octoginta is truly a fall classic. So come join the festivities this fall. It’s never been better!

Known as one of the best rides in the Midwest, the 2010 Octoginta promises to be another great end-of-season ride. The Lawrence Bicycle Club prides itself in going the extra mile to give you the best SAGs and support along with the gorgeous fall foliage that combine for a ride you’ll never forget.

The Sunflower Bike Shop and all of the Sunflower employees will again be providing a full breakfast with all of the trimmings at their expense as a part of their sponsorship of Octoginta. You won’t want to skip this SAG unless you were hoping to lose weight on the ride.

The Octoginta lunch SAG features a hearty minestrone soup that satisfies vegetarians and meat-lovers alike.

Lawrence Bike Map!

The City of Lawrence the bicycle rideability map has been posted online at http://www.lawrenceks.org/pds/bikemap.

This map is a tool to help you in find the best route for your skill level. It will alert you to difficult intersections, transit connection and bicycle parking facilities downtown. This map varies from the future and existing bicycle facilities map, which is a comprehensive map used as a system planning tool.

The bicycle rideability map is designed to promote, encourage and educate bicyclists. The map assists riders in choosing routes most applicable to their skill level, alerts them to difficult intersections, shows major landmarks to help bicyclists navigate around town and identifies transit connections. The map is currently only in a digital edition.

Come See Lawrence’s Complete Streets Presentation 9/29

The City of Lawrence would like to welcome you to attend a public overview presentation on Complete Streets. Complete Streets are planned, designed and operated to enable efficient and safe access for all users. Ideally, pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities should be able to conveniently travel along and across any street.

In an effort to help the citizens of Lawrence further the discussion of Complete Streets, the City of Lawrence will offer an overview presentation on Complete Streets to provide a background on the benefits of Complete Streets, dispel myths, explain how existing streets can be retrofitted into Complete Streets, and detail how a Complete Streets policy can even save residents money.

A Complete Streets presentation by Carol Kachadoorian, senior planner with the National Complete Streets Coalition will present a presentation on Wednesday, September 29 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in the Lawrence City Commission Room, 6 E. 6th Street. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

Carol Kachadoorian is a planner with nearly 30 years of experience in local government, policy development, government relations, and multi-modal transportation planning. She has worked on a number of complete streets projects and is the lead contributor of information on pedestrian and bicyclist access for a Transportation Cooperative Research Program project developing a guidebook for various access modes to high capacity transit stations.

This workshop is sponsored by the Lawrence Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization and the City of Lawrence in partnership with the Douglas County Community Foundation’s Live Well Lawrence Initiative. Please contact Jessica Mortinger at [email protected] or 785-832-3165 with questions.
