Youth Cycling Camp gives youth opportunity to learn bike safety

Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is offering youth the opportunity to be physically active throughout the afternoon as well as learn bicycle safety through its summer camp offering Youth Cycling Camp.

This week-long camp will provide participants with the opportunity to explore some of Lawrence’s parks through bike rides. Campers will meet in Hobbs Park, 702 E. 11th St., and then travel to other locations via sidewalks. Instruction will focus on safe riding and street crossing to other community parks where children will participate in games and craft activities.

Youth Cycling Camp is open to children eight-years-old to 12 years-old and is being offered 1-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, June 4-8 and June 18-22. Cost is $100 per child, per week.

All participants must provide their own bike and helmet. In the event of inclement weather, camp will be held at East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St.

May is National Bike Month!

May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to give biking a try.

Here in Lawrence, we will be celebrating Bike Month in a number of different ways this year. You will see Bike Month themed social media throughout the month of May from the City and the Parks and Recreation Department.

May 14 – 18 is Bike to Work Week
May 15 Bike Ride with the City Commission
May 18 is Bike to Work Day

Spring Helmet Fair Headed Back to KU Spring Football Game April 28th

LDFD The Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Department will hold their annual Helmet Fair on Saturday, April 28 on the University of Kansas campus alongside the annual Spring Football scrimmage. The event will be in Lot 92 & 94―East of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. The event will run from 10:00 a.m. to Noon and is free to attend. Immediately following the Helmet Fair, the KU Spring Football Scrimmage will take place at 1:00 p.m. in Memorial Stadium.

At the event, public safety staff will be on hand to provide and custom-fit bike helmets for children age 15 and younger (with an adult, while supplies last). Participants can have their bicycle inspected and take a ride on the Safe Ride Course. Staff will provide information on the rules of the road, bicycle safety tips, bike trail etiquette, booster seat safety and pool safety.

The Hawk Zone will be offered from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. featuring family-friendly activities.

The city’s Police and Fire-Medical Departments and Kansas University Public Safety are joining efforts to provide this event, along with several private and non-profit business partners including Kansas Athletics, Laird Noller, Safe Kids Douglas County, McDonalds, Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop, Douglas County Medical Society, Dillons, Ranjbar Orthodontics, State Farm Insurance, and Lawrence Pilot Club.

You Need To Know FLAT!

FLAT | Friends of Lawrence Area Trails There's a local organization you need to get to know. It's called FLAT, no it's not a play on the great plains once you get to the other side of the Flint Hills and can see Denver, FLAT is an acronym for the Friends of Lawrence Area Trails.

FLAT is a nonprofit group devoted to developing, promoting and maintaining a robust and vibrant trails system in Douglas County and northeast Kansas. FLAT’s primary roles are to raise funds for trail construction, build a community of trails supporters, and advocate for city, county and state investment in trails.

The founding committee is composed of local well-known local champions of being active that include:

We envision a time when Lawrence area residents and visitors of all ages and abilities have convenient access to a trail system that delivers healthy people, economic growth, and a green future.

Our immediate goal is to work toward completion and greater use of the Lawrence Loop, the 22-mile paved trail that will eventually circle the city.

Looking ahead, we will work toward expanding the Lawrence area trail network and promoting Lawrence as a northeast Kansas trail hub.

FLAT will work collaboratively with existing groups that build and maintain trails and organizations that host events on trails.

We intend to establish ourselves as a 501c3 by the close of 2018. Meanwhile, the Douglas County Community Foundation is accepting tax-deductible donations to the Friends of Lawrence Area Trails Fund.
